Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector

  • What is the Award Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector?

    In 2007 the Lifelong Learning Sector Skills Council, Lifelong Learning UK [LLUK], launched a series of professional standards and associated qualifications developed specifically for those working in community learning and development; further education, libraries, archives and information services; and work-based learning.

    The PTLLS award is the starting point for becoming qualified and counts towards the achievement of the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector. Those new in to teaching in the sector must achieve at least the PTLLS award within one year of appointment.

    The Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development [CIPD] are the awarding body for the CMS PTLLS programme, which enables our participants to apply for Associate membership of the Chartered Institute.

  • What does the programme involve?

    The PTLLS programme requires that individuals:

    • Participate in 30 hours of guided learning; this includes attendance at modules, tutorial time, remote support, review and assessment activities.
    • Record 30 hours of self-directed study, for example personal research, additional reading, mentoring sessions.

    The CMS programme of 5 x 1day modules is delivered over a period of 10 weeks.

    Individuals are assessed against the assessment criteria for the PTLLS award through one written assignment and observation, during the modules, of them delivering a micro-teaching session.

  • What are the programme aims and objectives?

    Aim:

    To provide the knowledge and skills development to enable participants to demonstrate their competence as defined by the professional standards for the award.

    Outcomes:

    As a result of this programme participants will:

    • Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches in relation to their specialist area
    • Demonstrate session planning skills
    • Understand how to deliver inclusive sessions which motivate learners
    • Understand the use of different assessment methods and the need for record keeping
    • Understand their own role, responsibilities and the boundaries of their role in relation to teaching
