- What is the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector?
In 2007 the Lifelong Learning Sector Skills Council, Lifelong Learning UK [LLUK], launched a series of professional standards and associated qualifications developed specifically for those working in further education, libraries, archives and information services ; and work-based learning.
The CTLLS qualification is appropriate for those who deliver learning in at least one of the following ways:
• From packs or pre-prepared materials
• On a one-to-one basis
• A programme limited to a particular level, subject or type of learner
• Short coursesThe Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development [CIPD] are the awarding body for the CMS CTLLS programme, which enables our participants to apply for Associate membership of the Chartered Institute.
Gaining the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector leads to Associate Teacher Learning and Skills status, enabling individuals to be registered and licensed to practise as a trainer/ teacher by the Institute for Learning [IfL]. This meets the expectation from the Government that all new staff employed as teachers, tutors, trainers, lecturers in the Lifelong Learning Sector are professionally registered and licensed.
- What does the programme involve?
The CTLLS programme requires that individuals:
• Participate in 120 hours of guided learning; this includes attendance at modules, tutorial time, remote support, review and assessment activities.
• Carry out a minimum of 30 hours teaching practice
• Record 90 hours of self-directed study, for example personal research, additional reading, mentoring sessions.The CMS programme is delivered over a period of twelve months through:
• 17 x 1 day modules
• 3 x ½ hour tutorials
• 6 x 1½ hour action learning sets
• Distance support
• Specialist mentor supportIndividuals are assessed against the assessment criteria for the qualification using a combination of written assignments, observation of teaching practice, questioning, product evidence and an individual learning record.

Aim:
To provide the knowledge and skills development to enable participants to demonstrate their competence as defined by the professional standards for this qualification.
